Idar’s iconic Arabesque design is a harmonized union between his Nordic heritage and the West Coast environment in which he grew up in. Paying homage to his Norwegian roots, Idar was inspired by the traditional style of decorative Nordic folk art, “Rosemaling” , a very flowy and swirly aesthetic made up of scrolls, vines, leaves and flowers. This traditional style inspired the perfect swirl and openness in the Arabesque design. Sometimes Idar will add berries and leaves to his Arabesque rings, reminiscent of a more intricate style of Rosemaling. The freedom, flowing and circular patterns in nature; such as the Pacific Ocean waves, windy days and the wind-swept trees of the West Coast also inspired the swirly design utilizing negative space. While offering a simple elegant look these "simple" designs are often the most work, as a skillful hand must perfect every curve. Idar won a Canadian Jewellers award for this groundbreaking Arabesque design.
